I became pregnant at twenty-two, after a very self-destructive phase of my mental health journey, marked by mania, alcohol, and poor medication management. Because of the psychiatric medications I was on and the risks of birth defects associated, I was encouraged to terminate the pregnancy. Due to my history of mental instability, others encouraged me to place my daughter for adoption. However, I chose to keep my daughter and raise her as a single mom until I met my husband. He, too, is the product of an unplanned pregnancy and adopted my daughter as his own when she was six years old. I was a middle school teacher for eleven years before launching my wellness business.
Today, I live life beyond my label, as a health coach with training from The Institute of Integrative Nutrition and The School of Applied Functional Medicine. I work as an integrative health coach at a holistic counseling and wellness center in Tyler, Texas. Every week I coach women and men who feel burdened by their labels, people who are looking for practical tools to feel well and whole again. I am a regular contributor to numerous online publications on the topic of mental health and wellness. Since 2020, I have published close to twenty articles on various platforms on mental health, parenting, and supporting emotional well-being. My articles have been featured in Yahoo! News. My podcast Sparking Wholeness has a large following across the globe. I frequently speak to groups and businesses, and I have been interviewed on over a dozen podcasts, the local newspaper, and local news stations.
Because my journey to mental wellness involves many different puzzle pieces, I refuse to take a one-size-fits-all approach to health. I understand what it’s like feel alone and burdened by a broken brain you feel is out of your control. I have three children who keep me busy, and my counselor-husband keeps me inspired.
Because I wear many hats as a wife, mom, podcaster, writer, speaker, and health coach, I must make time for rest and relaxation to support my mental health. Even though my illnesses have been in remission for over a decade, I choose to play offense with my health instead of defense.
My favorite nourishing activities are reading fiction, playing games with my family, watching my kids play sports and music, eating good food, taking nature walks, practicing yoga, and traveling anywhere—when I can!
